I Have A Nikon D40x Dslr. What Is The Best, Most Practical (& Inexpensive) Lens For It?

I have a Nikon D40X digital SLR camera and want a new lens for it. However, It is more of just a hobby (not professional). I only have the original 18-55mm lens that came with it and want another (with more zoom probably). I can’t spend a whole lot for it, but I’d like a practical lens that’s good quality. Any suggestions?

Since you are limited to AF-s lenses the best inexpensive lens is the 55-200 or the 55-200 VR.

How much is not a lot? The only inexpensive zooms are the 75-300 f/4-5.6 but the image quality is notoriously bad. You could get rid of the 18-55 and go for the 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 VR, which is a very popular lens, it also costs around 650. Unfortunately your only other option for cheap is to go with a third party lens manufacturer like Sigma, Tamron, or Tokina. however its an iffy bet, you are always better off staying with Nikon if you can.
