Nikon and Canon make excellent digital cameras in a wide price range for amateurs to pros.
I suggest you go to a real camera store and let them know what you want it for and the $$$ range you prefer. Let them show you what they think would be good for you.
Only buy when you have learned enough to be confident that you will be satisfied. Once you have decided, check on the internet for pricing. If you are really not very knowledgeable about photography, it is best from my experience to buy from a reliable local dealer. See if you can get an extended warranty for a reasonable amount. Find out what extra services the store offers – some will give you time after you have used the camera a while and you bring in the results.
I was able to get a great local store to match the best advertised price, which saved $40 on 2 cameras I bought for Christmas gifts. It included a free 2gb memory card for each one and a free lesson for each.
Mail order does not provide the service which can be very valuable if you choose to take advantage of the services.
I recommend Canon PowerShot SD880IS.
Here are a few of the things I was concerned about before purchasing this…hope this helps you:
1. Shutter lag? Nope, virtually none – the second I press the button it grabs the shot. And that’s with an old SD card. I imagine the new SDHC card I ordered will be even faster, if that is possible.
2. Gold vs silver? I wanted to purchase this from Amazon so got the gold color. It’s a very subtle gold and could easily be mistaken for silver. I was worried it might be too gold and flashy. The color is more of a champagne color.
3. Easy to use? Yes, only a couple of buttons on the back, and the auto mode is really all you need to get great pictures.
4. What type of media card? It takes SD or SDHC, both of which are great formats as they are cheap and universal. That’s why I don’t buy Sony products as they use a proprietary technology.
5. Easy to slip in my pocket? Yes, slips in my front jeans pocket easily, good size and light weight.
6. Battery charge? Lasts a good long time – unlike my last camera that had to be recharged at the end of every day.
I highly recommend this camera!
Canon PowerShot SD880IS 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Price: $247.95

Canon is the brand to go for.
I would buy the SD1100, it’s cheap under $150.
For better picture and video, get the Canon G series. (now it’s upto G10)
I had the G7 and it was great.
Never get Kodak, they are terrible.

maybe an sd890. My friend loves hers. Its small, light weight, easy to use and with 10 mega pixels the picture quality is going to look amazing.
